Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz (SiO₂), colored by ionized iron in combination with natural irradiation. Throughout history it was valued equally to rubies and sapphires — until massive deposits were discovered in Brazil in the 19th century, "demoting" it to a semi-precious stone. Today, amethyst is the most popular purple gemstone in the world.

History

In ancient Greece and Rome, amethyst was worn as protection against intoxication — the name comes from the Greek "amethystos" (not drunk). Cups made from amethyst or goblets decorated with amethyst were used for drinking wine, as it was believed to prevent drunkenness.

Before the discovery of Brazilian deposits in the 19th century, "Siberian amethyst" from the Ural Mountains was the most prized — it was compared to ruby and sapphire in value. When rich Brazilian deposits were discovered, the price of amethyst dropped dramatically and it moved into the semi-precious category.

Ametrine — a natural combination of amethyst and citrine — is a unique Bolivian stone. According to legend, a Spanish conquistador in the 1600s received it from Chief Anahi as a dowry for his daughter; when he returned to Spain, he gifted it to the Spanish court. The mine was then lost for three centuries and only rediscovered in the 1970s.

Siberian amethyst: Before Brazilian deposits were discovered, the most prized amethysts came from Russia's Ural Mountains ("Siberian amethyst"). Color: intense purple with reddish or bluish overtones. Today, Siberian specimens are museum rarities; the "Siberian" designation is often misused in the industry to indicate quality color (not actual origin).

Zambian amethyst: Today, Zambian amethyst is considered the quality benchmark alongside Siberian. Deep purple with reddish reflex; smaller deposits compared to Brazil yield less but more consistent quality.

Brazilian amethyst: By far the world's largest source. Quality is variable — from pale lavender to intense purple. Geodes from Santa Cruz do Sul are world-famous.

Color and light: Amethyst is pleochroic — viewed from different crystal axes it shows slightly different violet tones. Color fades with prolonged UV exposure (direct sunlight). High-quality amethyst retains warmth under artificial light; lower grade becomes grayish-violet.

Bolivianite (ametrine): A natural combination of amethyst and citrine in one crystal — found only at the Bolivian Anahi location. Half the stone is purple, half yellow. A unique and exclusive quartz variety.

Rarity

Amethyst is a relatively accessible stone — Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Cruz do Sul) produces it in large quantities from geodes and mines. Despite its accessibility, high-quality "Siberian" and Zambian amethyst with intense purple color without gray tones are premium categories.

Natural citrine is per GIA exceptionally rare — the vast majority of commercial citrine on the market is heat-treated amethyst. Likewise, ametrine (a natural combination of amethyst and citrine in one crystal) is available exclusively from the Anahi location in Bolivia.

Amethyst color fades with prolonged UV exposure — this must be considered for everyday wear jewelry.

When amethyst is heated to 400–500°C, the violet color converts to yellow — this becomes natural citrine. Most commercial citrine on the market is actually heat-treated amethyst. At higher temperatures (around 600°C) it becomes greenish prasiolite, known as "green amethyst" — though this is not gemologically precise.

Amethyst is Mohs hardness 7, the largest of all the quartz varieties. Despite the same chemical composition (SiO₂), the purple color is exclusively due to trace iron ions in the crystal lattice combined with natural radiation from surrounding minerals.

The largest amethyst geode in the world is the "Empress of Uruguay" — 3 meters tall, 2.5 tons heavy, displayed at Crystalworld in Australia. It contains thousands of violet crystals that grew over millions of years.

Natural vs lab-grown

Synthetic amethyst is produced by the hydrothermal process — the same process as natural amethyst formation, but under laboratory-controlled conditions. It is chemically and physically identical to natural amethyst. GIA certificates distinguish natural from synthetic via X-ray diffractometry (synthetics have different growth zone patterns). On the market, synthetic amethyst is rarely labeled as such — a significant portion of cheaper commercial amethyst may be synthetic without explicit disclosure.

Heat treatment of amethyst: When heated to 400–500°C, amethyst becomes citrine (yellow color) or prasiolite (green). This is not a "synthetic" — it is a treated natural gemstone. Most commercial citrine on the market is heat-treated amethyst.

For buyers: synthetic amethyst is significantly cheaper than natural; a GIA certificate is a reliable test. Irradiation-treated amethyst (restoring faded color) exists on the market but is rarely disclosed.

Treatment

Most amethysts on the market are untreated. Heat treatment (heating at 400–500°C) converts amethyst to citrine or prasiolite (green quartz) — this requires open disclosure. Irradiation restores faded color. Treatments for amethyst are thus rare and less problematic than for precious stones.

Care & maintenance

Quartz hardness 7 is reasonably durable but more brittle than corundum. Clean with mild detergent and soft brush; ultrasonic is safe. Protect from direct sunlight — UV fades color. Store in a dark space or pouch. Avoid chemicals and perfume vapors.

What to look for when buying

Color: intense purple with reddish or bluish overtone; no gray component
Even color: color must be uniform throughout the stone without color zoning
Clarity: amethyst is Type II stone — inclusions are more common; eye-clean is standard
Size: relatively accessible in larger carat weights; above 10 ct of high color is premium
Origin: Zambian and Siberian command premium; Brazilian is standard market
