Pearl is a unique organic gemstone — formed in mollusks (oysters and clams) as a defensive mechanism when a foreign object enters. The mollusk secretes nacre (mother-of-pearl) around the intruder in concentric layers. It is the only gemstone created by a living organism. Natural pearls without human intervention are extremely rare today — what's on the market are cultured pearls.

History
The oldest written mention of pearl dates to 2206 BC — a Chinese historian describes pearls as a gift to an emperor. Homer mentions them in epic poems before 700 BC. Julius Caesar had a known weakness for pearls — Suetonius records that he collected and gifted them.
Marco Polo describes the birthday of Kublai Khan (1215–1294), where court nobles were gifted precious pearls. English monarchs Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were obsessed with pearls: Elizabeth I collected thousands of pearls throughout her life to adorn garments, hair, and jewelry.
Kokichi Mikimoto first successfully cultured a blister pearl in 1893 in Japanese waters, opened the first cultured pearl shop in Tokyo in 1899, perfected the technique for full cultured pearls by 1908, and was marketing them internationally by 1920.

Natural vs. cultured pearls: A natural pearl forms without human intervention — a foreign object (sand, parasite) naturally enters the oyster. They are exceptionally rare; most on today's market are old or certified from the Persian Gulf or Japan. Cultured pearls (Kokichi Mikimoto patent, 1893, Japan) form by implanting a nucleus (pearl bead or tissue graft) into an oyster — the oyster is then returned to water and grown for 2–7 years. Cultured pearls are not "fakes" — they are real pearls, the only difference being the initiation of the process.
Pearl quality parameters: GIA grades pearls on: luster (brilliance — most important; "mirror-like" is premium), surface (no spots, cracks, bumps), shape (round is premium; drop, baroque, semi-round), color (body color + overtone + orient), size (mm), matching in sets (for necklaces and earrings).
Akoya pearls (Japan, China): Most common cultured saltwater pearls. 2–11 mm. Brilliant luster, often white with pink overtone. Japanese Akoya is the high-quality standard; Chinese are a cheaper alternative.
South Sea pearls: Largest cultured pearls (10–20 mm). White to gold color. Australia (silver-white), Philippines/Indonesia (gold). Satiny luster. Very valuable.
Tahitian pearls: Naturally dark — gray to black with green, purple, or bronze overtones. From Polynesia. 8–16 mm. "Peacock" overtone (dark green-purple) is premium.
Freshwater pearls (China): Cultured in freshwater lakes without nucleus (tissue nucleated) — result is 95–100% nacre. Accessible, often excellent value. Various shapes and colors.
Rarity
Natural pearl is one of the rarest gems in the world — the result of a random natural process. For every natural pearl found by pearl divers, millions of oysters contain none. After the discovery of oil in the Persian Gulf in 1908, pearl divers lost their livelihood; the natural pearl industry effectively disappeared in the 20th century.
Mikimoto cultured pearls (Japan, from 1899) are today's standard — 99% of pearls on the market are cultured. Natural pearls in collections are worth multiples of comparable cultured ones.
Tahitian pearls (black, Polynesia) and South Sea pearls (white and golden, Australia/Philippines/Indonesia) are premium cultured pearls with thick nacre — white South Sea pearls are often sold at prices comparable to precious gemstones.
Did you know
Pearl is the only gemstone of organic origin (along with amber and coral) that forms inside a living organism. Aragonite crystals (CaCO₃) are deposited in layers around a nucleus, building up the characteristic lustrous iridescence.
The Japanese words "mikimoto" and "akoya" have officially entered English as gemological terms. Mikimoto (Kokichi Mikimoto, 1858–1954) was often called the "pearl king" and patented his methods despite fierce opposition from the Japanese natural pearl industry.
Cocktail legend: Cleopatra allegedly wagered with Mark Antony that she could eat a meal worth more than a fortune at a single lunch. She took a large pearl, dissolved it in vinegar, and drank the mixture. Modern chemistry confirms: the calcium carbonate in pearl reacts with acetic acid and dissolves.
Treatment
Pearls are frequently bleached for uniform white color, tinted for more intense tones, and irradiation-treated for darker colors. Most Akoya and South Sea pearls are bleached. GIA and GemTec laboratories certify natural, cultured, and treated pearls via X-ray examination.

Iridescenca
Iridescence is an interference of colors on the surface of a gemstone — a rainbow-like shimmer that changes as the stone or light is rotated. Most prominent in pearls (orient), labradorite, and some opals. In pearls, a special phenomenon called "orient" occurs — a deep rainbow luster on the pearl surface caused by the thin-layered aragonite nacre structure.
Care & maintenance
Pearls are soft (2.5–4.5) and of organic origin — they require special care. The last thing you put on (after perfume, hairspray, cosmetics). Clean with a soft damp cloth after wearing. Never chemicals, ultrasonic, or steam. String should be checked annually (it stretches). Store separately in a soft pouch. Regular wearing maintains moisture from skin — pearls that are never worn dry out.
