Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz, colored by iron impurities. The name derives from Latin citrus (lemon). Natural citrines with intense color are relatively rare — most commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz. Madeira citrine with deep red-orange color is the most prized variety.

History
Citrine was among the golden and yellow gems in antiquity — Romans wore it as a talisman against negative thoughts and venomous snakes. The name comes from Latin "citrus" (lemon), referring to the color.
In the 19th century, when large Brazilian amethyst deposits were discovered, miners began heating amethyst to obtain yellow color — enormous quantities of commercial citrine resulted. This practice became standard and is today considered an industrially accepted treatment.
"Madeira citrine" is a designation for intensely red-orange color (after the color of Madeira port wine) — this is the most prized color for citrines. Spanish citrine with a pale yellow-orange color is known as "Palmeira."
In depth
Natural vs. treated: Natural citrines are pale yellow and relatively rare. Most vivid yellow to orange citrines on the market are amethyst fired at 470–560°C, converting the purple color to yellow. This conversion is permanent and accepted industry practice. A gemologist cannot visually distinguish natural from treated citrine.
Madeira citrine: The warmest, most intense citrine — deep red-orange-brown color reminiscent of Madeira wine (after which it is named). From Brazil. It is the premium among citrines.
Ametrine (Bolivianite): A natural combination of amethyst and citrine in one crystal — found only at the Anahi mine in Bolivia. Half the stone is purple, half yellow. Brazilians often imitate it via color diffusion; the Bolivian original is certified.
Citrine vs. topaz distinction: Citrines are often misleadingly sold as "Brazil topaz" or "gold topaz." Real topaz is significantly harder (8) with a different crystal structure. A refractometer distinguishes both.
Rarity
Natural citrine is per GIA exceptionally rare — this is one of the most important facts GIA CS repeatedly emphasizes when describing citrine. The vast majority of commercial citrine (likely over 95%) is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz that changed color through heating.
Natural citrine comes from Bolivia, Spain, Madagascar, Mexico, and Uruguay. Bolivia is the only known source of natural ametrine (a combination of natural citrine and amethyst in one crystal — from the Anahi mine).
Despite natural rarity, the price of citrine does not reflect this rarity — the market treats it the same as treated stones, meaning that for a buyer who understands the difference, natural citrine is a value anomaly.

Citrine and amethyst are physically the same mineral (SiO₂ — quartz); the difference is exclusively in trace chemical composition: amethyst contains Fe³⁺ (ferric iron), which gives violet color; citrine contains an Fe²⁺-Fe³⁺ complex or Fe³⁺ in a different state, which gives yellow.
When amethyst is heated to 400–500°C, Fe³⁺ is reduced and color converts from violet to yellow — it becomes citrine. When citrine is heated to 600°C, the color disappears. This is a reversible chemical process exploited by the industry for mass production of citrine from cheaper amethyst.
Bolivian ametrine is the only stone in the world that naturally shows two colors in one crystal — violet (amethyst) and yellow (citrine). This occurs during crystallization when temperature in the Anahi mine naturally fluctuates between the optimal values for both colors simultaneously.
Natural vs lab-grown
Citrine has no synthetic equivalent in the strict sense, because most commercial citrine is actually heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz. GIA CS confirms: heating amethyst at 470–560°C converts it to citrine's yellow-orange color. This process is permanent, industry-standardized, and is not considered a "fake" in the trade.
Synthetic amethyst (which is then heated to produce citrine) exists — hydrothermally grown; chemically identical to natural. Synthetic citrine from synthetic amethyst thus has doubly "laboratory" origin.
A gemologist cannot visually distinguish natural citrine from treated amethyst, or natural from synthetic. The difference is confirmed by laboratory analysis (GIA certificate).
For buyers: the value of natural citrine is not significantly higher than treated — both are legitimate and accepted in the market. Caution with "rainbow citrines" with surface coatings that wear off.
Treatment
Most citrine is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz — this is standard and not negative. Irradiation restores faded color. Coatings are less common but exist — caution with unusually intense "rainbow" citrines.
Care & maintenance
Same as amethyst (same mineral). Clean with mild detergent; ultrasonic is safe. Protect from direct sunlight — UV fades color.
