Garnet is not one mineral but a group of chemically related minerals with the same crystal structure. The general formula X₃Y₂(SiO₄)₃ allows for enormous variation. The most common is red almandine garnet, but green (demantoid, tsavorite), orange (spessartine, hessonite), purple, and even rare blue and color-change specimens exist.

History

Egyptians wore red garnets in necklaces, adorned pharaohs, and placed them in tombs for the afterlife over 3,000 years ago. In ancient Rome, garnets were among the most widespread gems — Pliny the Elder in Naturalis Historia (23–79 AD) describes carbuncles (garnets) and pyropes as favored ornamental stones of the time.

In the Middle Ages (475–1450 AD), garnets were favored by clergy and nobility. Bohemian garnet deposits in Czech Republic were discovered around 1500 and became the leading European source. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Bohemian garnets in the dense carbuncle technique (garnets covered with garnets) became a symbol of Continental European jewelry tradition.

Tsavorite was discovered in 1967 by geologist Campbell Bridges in Tanzania (Tsavo — hence the name) and was later proclaimed one of the few green stones with excellent clarity.

In depth

Demantoid garnet is the most valuable variety — vivid green (colored by chromium), with dispersion (fire) greater than diamond. It forms in serpentinite rocks and comes primarily from Russia's Urals. It has unique "horsetail" inclusions from chrysotile fibers, which gemologists consider a positive sign of Ural origin. Demantoid above 2 ct is exceptionally rare.

Tsavorite garnet is the green variety (grossular garnet), colored by chromium and vanadium. Discovered in the 1960s at the Kenya-Tanzania border (Tsavo National Park). Green as emerald, often cleaner and without treatment. Prices rival low to medium-quality emeralds.

Spessartine (mandarin garnet) — orange garnet from Tanzania, Namibia, and Nigeria with exceptional brilliance. "Mandarin orange" color is among the most vivid in gemology.

Malaia garnet — hybrid between pyrope and spessartine, orange-pink color, from East Africa. Often has excellent saturation without treatment.

Color-change garnet — shifts from green or blue-green in daylight to purplish-red under incandescent light. Rare and expensive; same mechanism as alexandrite (chromium absorption).

Almandine — the most common; dark red to purplish-red. The basis for "standard" garnet in jewelry. Relatively affordable.

Garnets and treatment: Garnets are one of the rare gemstone groups almost never treated — what's on the market is often 100% natural and untreated. This is a significant advantage.

Rarity

Red garnet (almandine, pyrope, rhodolite) is one of the most common colored gems — accessible, affordable, and in a wide color spectrum. Nevertheless, some varieties are exceptionally rare:
- Tsavorite (green grossular from Tanzania/Kenya) is one of the rarest green stones — at high quality comparable to emerald, often with better clarity
- Demantoid (green andradite from the Ural Mountains) — per GIA has the highest refractive index and dispersion among all garnets, greater than diamond; Ural specimens with "horsetail" inclusions are premium
- Blue garnet (color change, extremely rare, Tanzania) — one of the rarest garnets

Bohemian garnets (pyropes from Czech Republic) were the leading source from the 1500s to the 20th century.

Garnet is a group of minerals, not a single mineral — there are six main species (almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, andradite, uvarovite) and many mixed forms. All share the same crystal structure but different chemical composition and color.

Demantoid garnet has dispersion of 0.057 — higher than diamond (0.044). This means it has potentially more "fire" than diamond, but because it is relatively softer (6.5), this fire diminishes over time with wear.

"Horsetail" inclusions in Ural demantoid are unique golden-brown asbestos inclusions radiating from the center of the crystal. GIA notes that these inclusions paradoxically increase value — they are unambiguous proof of Ural origin and naturalness.

Treatment

Unlike most precious gemstones, garnets are almost never treated. This is one of their most important advantages. Rare exceptions: fracture filling in some almandine stones; irradiation in certain orange varieties. GIA certificate confirms.

Asterism is an optical phenomenon in which light creates a glowing multi-rayed star on the surface of a cabochon-cut gemstone. The most famous examples are star ruby and star sapphire with a distinct six-rayed star that moves with the light source. Some stones, such as star garnet or Indian sapphire, display a twelve-rayed star.

Color change is a rare phenomenon where a gemstone displays different colors under different types of light. Alexandrite is the absolute standard: pure green in daylight, vivid red under incandescent light. Some sapphires shift from blue to violet-red. Tanzanite displays a color shift between blue and violet depending on the viewing angle.

Common

Dispersion, or "fire," is the property of a gemstone to split white light into spectral rainbow colors — red, yellow, green, and blue sparkles visible as the stone moves. Diamond is the reference gemstone for dispersion. Zircon, spinel, and demantoid garnet also display exceptional dispersion. Dispersion value is measured as the difference in refractive index between blue (486 nm) and red (687 nm) light.

Care & maintenance

Hardness 6.5–7.5 is acceptable for wear. Clean with mild detergent; ultrasonic is safe for untreated garnets. Demantoid is more brittle — prong setting is recommended. Protect from chemicals and thermal shock.

Variety: demantoid (green, Ural) and tsavorite (green) are premium; spessartine (orange) highly valued
