Kunzite is the pink to violet-pink variety of spodumene (lithium pyroxene), colored by manganese. Named after gemologist G.F. Kunz in 1902. Comes in exceptionally large crystals — stones above 100 ct are not unusual. Has intense pleochroism: different colors viewed from different crystal axes (pink, violet, colorless). Known for exceptional clear pink color reminiscent of morganite but more violet.

History

Kunzite was described and named in 1902 after George Frederick Kunz — Tiffany & Company's leading colored stone specialist, author, and gemologist. Kunz was one of the most influential gemologists of his time (he also described morganite), responsible for acquiring numerous prestigious stones for European and American aristocrats.

First specimens were discovered in San Diego, California, USA — the same mines known for tourmaline supplies to the Chinese imperial court. Today Afghanistan (Nuristan) is the largest source of high-quality kunzites.

Kunzite is per GIA CS covered together with moonstone and diopside in Assignment 26 (Feldspar, Spodumene, and Diopside) — indicating a related gemological treatment of stones with challenging optical properties.

In depth

Crystal size: Spodumene crystals grow to exceptional dimensions — raw crystals over 1 kg are not rare in Afghan and Pakistani deposits. This means kunzites are accessible in large carat weights (10–100+ ct) at reasonable prices. "Princess Kunzite" (880 ct faceted) was a gift to Jacqueline Kennedy.

Pleochroism: Kunzite is strongly pleochroic — viewed along the c crystal axis, color is most intense. The cutter must correctly orient the stone so the "c axis" coincides with the view through the table facet (buyer's view side). Wrong orientation means pale or colorless appearance.

UV fading: Kunzite is one of the stones that "fades in light" — prolonged exposure to natural UV light gradually bleaches the color. This is a limitation that classifies it as an "evening stone" — suitable for evening occasions, not daily wear in direct sunlight.

Hiddenite: The green variety of spodumene (same mineral) colored by chromium. Rare — deposits limited to North Carolina, USA, and Brazil. Commands high prices.

Brittleness: Has two perfect cleavage planes parallel to the longitudinal crystal axis — brittle when struck from the side. Requires careful handling and protective setting.

Rarity

Kunzite is relatively accessible — Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Brazil provide adequate supply. Intensely pink-violet color with sufficient saturation (not too pale) and size above 10 ct are premium.

Kunzite is spodumene (LiAlSi₂O₆) — the same mineral as hiddenite (green spodumene, colored by chromium). Hiddenite from North Carolina, USA is exceptionally rare; kunzite is more common.

Particularly exceptional are Afghan kunzites: crystals up to 1 kg and more allow cutting stones above 100 ct. Such specimens are prized among collectors and at auction.

Kunzite is strongly pleochroic — viewed along different crystal axes it displays intense pink-violet, pale pink, and nearly colorless. The cutter must precisely orient the crystal so that the intense color is visible face-up.

Kunzite fluoresces under UV light and is one of the rare gems that phosphoresces — it glows in the dark after exposure to light. This property is unique and prized among collectors.

Afghan kunzites are often natural, untreated, and achieve unique sizes (above 100 ct). Despite this, they are more price-accessible than comparably sized rubies, sapphires, or emeralds — making them particularly interesting for buyers with a fixed budget.

Natural vs lab-grown

Kunzite has no commercial synthetic equivalent. GIA CS notes:
- Irradiation of spodumene creates kunzite's pink color from colorless or lightly colored spodumene — "similarly to natural color, hues created by radiation can fade under heat or light." This is not a true synthetic, but an irradiation-treated natural stone.
- Irradiated green spodumene: some irradiation treatments convert spodumene to intense green (hiddenite imitant) — but this color typically fades rapidly.

Kunzite imitants (not synthetic spodumene, but various materials):
- Glass (most common)
- Synthetic sapphire
- Synthetic spinel

For buyers: kunzite is naturally available in exceptionally large carat weights at reasonable prices — synthesis is not economically practical. A GIA certificate confirms naturalness. Pink color fades in sunlight during wear — this is a natural process, not a quality defect.

Treatment

Kunzite is rarely treated. Irradiation intensifies color but is unstable (color regresses). Heat treatment improves clarity in some specimens. UV fading is NOT a treatment — it is a natural process. Storage in darkness is recommended.

Fluorescence is a phenomenon where a gemstone absorbs invisible UV light (ultraviolet) and immediately re-emits it as visible light of a different color. Burmese rubies fluoresce vivid red under UV light — this dramatically enhances their appearance and value. Many diamonds fluoresce blue, which some buyers find desirable (gives blue-white appearance in diffused daylight) and others undesirable (gives an "oily" look under incandescent light). Emeralds often fluoresce red.

Pleochroism is the property of certain crystals to display different colors when viewed from different crystallographic directions. Alexandrite shows three colors (trichromatism): green, brownish-red, and violet. Tanzanite has strong trichromatism: blue, violet, and reddish-brown. Kunzite shows pink, violet, and colorless. Pleochroism results from the anisotropic optical properties of non-cubic minerals.

Phosphorescence is the rarer sibling of fluorescence — the gemstone not only glows under UV light, but continues emitting light for several seconds to minutes after the UV source is removed. Kunzite is one of the few gemstones with notable phosphorescence: after UV excitation, it continues emitting an orange to yellow glow. The phenomenon is a completely benign optical property with no impact on value or stone structure.

Care & maintenance

Hardness 6.5–7 and two perfect cleavage planes require bezel setting or low prong. Store in darkness — UV fading is permanent. Clean with soft damp cloth; no ultrasonic (cleavage planes). Ideal for earrings and pendants (less exposed to impacts than rings).
