Morganite is the pink to peach variety of beryl (same mineral as emerald and aquamarine), colored by manganese ions. Named after banker and gem enthusiast J.P. Morgan in 1910. In the past decade it has become one of the most popular gemstones, thanks to the rose gold jewelry trend with which its warm color perfectly harmonizes.

History
Morganite was officially named in 1910 after J.P. Morgan — the American banker, financier, and collector of precious stones. The name was proposed by George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany & Company's colored stone specialist (and himself a gemologist after whom kunzite is named), in honor of Morgan's gemstone collection and support of the Natural History Museum.
First specimens were discovered in Madagascar in 1911. Morganite became popular in the Edwardian and Art Deco eras — pastel pink and peach tones paired well with platinum and white gold.
The modern morganite renaissance began in the 2000s with the growing popularity of rose gold in jewelry — the pink color of morganite and rose gold create a harmonious combination that has become iconic for engagement rings and elegant jewelry.
In depth
Color and tone: Morganite ranges from pale pink to intense peachy-pink. The most prized color is "salmon pink" or "peachy-pink" — warm, saturated pink with an orange undertone. Pale specimens are less valuable. Madagascar produces some of the most intense specimens.
Rose gold synergy: The combination of morganite with rose gold creates aesthetic harmony of warm tones that has become one of the leading engagement ring trends over the last 15 years. Cooler white gold or platinum gives morganite contrasting elegance.
Beryl group: Morganite shares its mineral group with emerald, aquamarine, heliodor (yellow beryl), and goshenite (colorless beryl). All are beryl — the difference is in the coloring elements. Morganite = manganese; aquamarine = iron.
Clarity: Morganite is often relatively clean (GIA Type I stone) — inclusions are rarer than in emerald. This makes morganite accessible in eye-clean quality.
Size and price: Morganite is accessible in larger carat weights at reasonable prices — 5–20 ct stones of excellent quality are realistic. This makes it ideal as a center stone where diamond cost is prohibitive. Price per carat is significantly lower than ruby, sapphire, or emerald.
Rarity
Morganite is a relatively accessible beryl — Brazil, Madagascar, and Afghanistan provide adequate supply. Nevertheless, stones with intense peachy-pink color above 10 ct are premium.
Morganite has experienced an exceptional surge in popularity in China in the last 15 years — demand from Asia has per GIA increased the price by several hundred percent since 2010. This was one of the fastest price movements in semi-precious stones in the modern market.
Two faceted morganites (236 ct and 250 ct) are displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington — proof that the stone occurs in exceptionally large, clean crystals.
Did you know
Morganite, emerald, aquamarine, heliodor, and bixbite are all varieties of the same mineral — beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈). Color is determined by chemical impurities: emerald contains chromium and/or vanadium (green); aquamarine contains iron (blue); morganite contains manganese (pink/salmon-pink); heliodor contains iron (yellow); red bixbite contains manganese + vanadium (red — exceptionally rare).
Morganite is a Type I stone — inclusions are exceptionally rare. This means most morganite is eye-clean without special selection. Compare with emerald: virtually every emerald has visible inclusions; morganite is cleaner in this property than its relative.
George Kunz was one of the most influential gemologists of his time — besides kunzite and morganite, he discovered or described numerous new mineral varieties and was Tiffany's foremost reference for purchasing colored stones for royal clients.
Treatment
Most morganite is heat treated to improve color and eliminate yellowish or orangish tones to pure pink. Irradiation is rarer. Treatment is stable and industry standard.

Pleokroizem
Pleochroism is the property of certain crystals to display different colors when viewed from different crystallographic directions. Alexandrite shows three colors (trichromatism): green, brownish-red, and violet. Tanzanite has strong trichromatism: blue, violet, and reddish-brown. Kunzite shows pink, violet, and colorless. Pleochroism results from the anisotropic optical properties of non-cubic minerals.
Care & maintenance
Hardness 7.5–8 is good for wear. Clean with mild detergent and soft brush; ultrasonic is safe. Color stability is good. Protect from chemicals and hard impacts.
