Ruby is the red variety of corundum (Al₂O₃), colored by chromium oxide. It is one of the four classical precious gemstones alongside diamond, sapphire, and emerald. With hardness 9, it ranks just below diamond — exceptionally durable for everyday wear. The finest rubies, known for "pigeon's blood" color, come from the Mogok Valley in Burma.

History

Ruby is called "ratnaraj" — king of precious stones — in ancient Sanskrit texts. Pliny the Elder in Naturalis Historia (1st century AD) describes red stones traded in the Roman Empire. Rubies were among the most prized gems of Asia and the Middle East throughout the Middle Ages.

The Mogok Valley in Burma has a mining tradition extending 2,000 years into the past per GIA. Legend says an eagle pulled three eggs from a serpent's nest — from the first came the King of Bagan, from the second the Emperor of China, from the third precious rubies. The Mogok Valley, "Valley of Rubies," was for generations of jewelers the benchmark of "pigeon's blood" quality.

The story of Nga Mauk from the mid-1800s illustrates the draconian laws under Burmese rule: a miner discovered a large, exceptional ruby that he was legally required to surrender to the rulers. Instead, he broke it in two. As punishment, his house and village were burned, and his wife died of grief. The remaining piece, known as the "Nga Mauk Ruby," reportedly came into the British treasury after the annexation of Burma in 1885.

In depth

Ruby's color comes from chromium — the same element that colors emeralds green. In corundum's crystal structure, chromium replaces some aluminum ions; chromium concentration determines the intensity of the red color. High chromium content also causes fluorescence under UV light — Burmese rubies fluoresce vivid red, which under daylight (which contains UV) enhances their color. This property is one reason Burmese rubies command premium prices.

Origin and value: Burmese rubies from the Mogok Valley are the legendary quality benchmark. "Pigeon's blood" color — pure vivid red with a slight bluish hue and high luster — was described with this metaphor in Burmese manuscripts centuries ago. GIA and SSEF certificates for top stones explicitly state "Mogok, Myanmar" as origin, adding 50–300% value compared to an equally quality stone without documented origin. Mozambican rubies (Montepuez mine, discovered 2009) have become a worthy alternative: vivid red with less fluorescence. Thai rubies are darker and more purplish.

Ruby vs. pink sapphire boundary: Per GIA, ruby is corundum with sufficiently high red color saturation — lighter stones are classified as "pink sapphire." This boundary is subjective and debated among gemologists. In practice: a true ruby must have red as its primary hue (not pink with reddish overtones).

Star rubies contain rutile inclusions creating asterism — a six or twelve-rayed star. Most valued are dark red cabochons with a sharp, well-centered star. Ruby "Rajaratna" (2,475 ct) is one of the largest known star rubies.

Synthetic rubies have been available since 1902 (Verneuil method) — chemically and physically identical to natural, but significantly cheaper. A GIA certificate distinguishes natural from synthetic.

Rarity

A fine-quality ruby over 1 carat is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. A faceted stone over 5 carats with good color and clarity is exceptionally rare — per GIA, price per carat increases exponentially with weight, reflecting the extreme scarcity of larger specimens.

In the 21st century, Africa has replaced Southeast Asia as the largest source of rubies. Mozambique (Montepuez mine, discovered 2009) is now the world's most important source of commercial-quality rubies.

The term "pigeon's blood" for ruby color has ancient origins — per GIA, this metaphor appears in Burmese manuscripts. It describes a pure vivid red color with a slight bluish hue, similar to the first drops of blood from a pigeon's nostril. The description has remained in gemological terminology to this day and appears on SSEF and Gübelin certificates.

Ruby and sapphire are physically the same mineral — corundum (Al₂O₃). The difference is solely color: when chromium saturation is sufficiently high, the stone receives the name ruby; a less saturated or pinkish stone is "pink sapphire." This boundary is per GIA subjective and one of the classic disputes in gemology.

Star rubies contain microscopic needle-like rutile inclusions oriented in three directions. These inclusions form asterism — a six or twelve-rayed star that appears to "float" beneath the surface in moving point-source light. Such stones are always cut as cabochons, as the star is not visible in a faceted cut.

Natural vs lab-grown

Synthetic ruby was the first precious gemstone successfully produced in the laboratory. Auguste Verneuil published his flame-fusion method in 1902 — the stone was initially sold on the market as "Geneva ruby" from a fictitious mine.

Verneuil (flame fusion): cheapest and fastest method (hours to days). Chemically identical to natural, but displays curved growth structures (curved striae) and solitary gas bubbles without accompanying liquid — a combination that does not occur in natural stones. Common in mass-produced jewelry, technical applications (lasers, watch bearings), and birthstone pieces.

Flux synthetics (Chatham, Kashan, Ramaura): more expensive and slower (months to years). Show "dripping icicle" or "wispy veil" inclusions closer in appearance to natural ruby, but still identifiable under 20–40× magnification.

Hydrothermal synthetics (Tairus, Russian producers): hardest to distinguish from natural — the growth process most closely mimics natural geological formation. Reliable identification requires UV spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy at an accredited laboratory. GIA clearly marks every synthetic ruby as "laboratory-grown" on the certificate.

Treatment

The majority of rubies (>90%) are heat treated to improve color and clarity. Heating at 1800°C dissolves silky rutile inclusions and improves color — this is an industry-accepted and stable method that does not impact value. Less acceptable is glass filling (lead glass filling): the stone is filled with lead glass for dramatic clarity improvement — these stones are significantly cheaper and more fragile. GIA certificates distinguish between "heat only" (acceptable), "residues in fractures" (glass filling), and "no indications of heating" (untreated — premium).

Asterism is an optical phenomenon in which light creates a glowing multi-rayed star on the surface of a cabochon-cut gemstone. The most famous examples are star ruby and star sapphire with a distinct six-rayed star that moves with the light source. Some stones, such as star garnet or Indian sapphire, display a twelve-rayed star.

Fluorescence is a phenomenon where a gemstone absorbs invisible UV light (ultraviolet) and immediately re-emits it as visible light of a different color. Burmese rubies fluoresce vivid red under UV light — this dramatically enhances their appearance and value. Many diamonds fluoresce blue, which some buyers find desirable (gives blue-white appearance in diffused daylight) and others undesirable (gives an "oily" look under incandescent light). Emeralds often fluoresce red.

Care & maintenance

Hardness 9 makes ruby excellent for everyday wear. Clean with mild detergent and a soft brush. Ultrasonic cleaning is safe for untreated and heat-treated rubies; avoid for glass-filled stones (glass dissolves). Protect from chemicals. Despite hardness, it is brittle along cleavage planes — avoid sharp impacts.
