Sapphire is any corundum that is not red enough to be a ruby — "sapphire" without a qualifier always means blue. The blue color arises from a combination of titanium and iron. Kashmir sapphires from the 1880s are the absolute quality reference: an unreproducible velvety blue with milky light scattering that cannot be replicated.

History
Throughout history, sapphire adorned the garments and insignia of rulers and high clergy. In antiquity, Greeks and Romans believed sapphire carried wisdom and protection. Ancient tradition held that the blue of the sky came from the reflection of the sapphire upon which the Earth rested.
Kashmir sapphires were discovered accidentally in the 1880s when a landslide revealed a deposit high in the Himalayas. Over the following 15 years, stones of incomparable quality were extracted — "cornflower blue" with a characteristic silky haze caused by microscopic inclusions. Then the mine was exhausted. These stones are today among the most sought-after at auction.
Kate Middleton, now Princess of Wales, wears an engagement ring with a 12-carat Ceylon sapphire that once belonged to Princess Diana. This ring became one of the most recognizable jewels of the 21st century and sparked renewed worldwide interest in blue sapphires.
In depth
Kashmir sapphires — the mine in Padar at 4000m altitude operated only from 1881 to 1887, when snowy conditions and politics halted it. In this short period, stones of velvety blue color with soft silky luster reached the market — the effect is caused by microscopic rutile inclusions that scatter light and give the color a "velvet" texture. Today, SSEF or Gübelin confirmation of Kashmir origin is one of the strongest premiums in gemology — a stone of equal color but Madagascar origin may be worth 3–10× less.
Ceylon (Sri Lankan) sapphires — Sri Lanka has one of the world's longest gem-mining traditions (3000 years). Sapphires are lighter, more vibrant blue to violet-blue. The famous "Blue Belle of Asia" (392 ct) and "Logan sapphire" (422.99 ct, Smithsonian) are of Ceylon origin.
Burmese sapphires — darker, more intensely blue, often with reddish or purplish overtones. Less fluorescence than ruby.
Madagascar sapphires are today the most common on the market — high quality and accessibility. Color ranges from light blue to vivid royal blue.
Fancy sapphires: Yellow sapphire contains iron (without titanium). Pink sapphire is a border case with ruby. Padparadscha — exceptionally rare orange-pink combination, exclusively from Sri Lanka and Madagascar; GIA certifies it specifically. Green sapphire contains iron and titanium in a ratio producing green. White (colorless) sapphire is pure corundum without impurities. Star sapphires: the most famous is "Star of India" (563 ct) from Sri Lanka.
Color-change sapphire shifts from blue (daylight) to violet-red (incandescent light) — a rare phenomenon commanding high prices.
Rarity
Sapphire is a gem that has symbolized nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness — adorning the robes of royalty and clergy for centuries. Kashmir sapphires from the Zanskar Valley, mined in the 1880s and 1890s, have always been proclaimed the standard of finest quality, but the mine was quickly exhausted; genuine Kashmir sapphires are now extremely rare.

Most commercial-quality sapphires today come from Madagascar; Sri Lanka remains a source of premium stones.

Sapphire comes in every color except red — the red variety of corundum is ruby. Yellow, pink, orange, violet, and green sapphires are known as "fancy sapphires" and are becoming increasingly sought-after. Padparadscha — a rare orange-pink variety — ranks among the most expensive sapphires in the world.
Color change is a rare phenomenon in some sapphires: the stone appears blue-violet in daylight and violet-red in incandescent light. Such stones are known as "color-change sapphires" and come primarily from Tanzania and Madagascar.
Star sapphires contain oriented rutile inclusions that form a six or twelve-rayed asterism. The "Star of India" (563.35 ct) and the "Star of Bombay" (182 ct) in the Smithsonian are among the largest faceted star sapphires in the world.
Natural vs lab-grown
Synthetic sapphires are produced by the same methods as synthetic rubies — both are corundum (Al₂O₃) differing only in the coloring agent.
Verneuil (flame fusion): cheapest method; synthetic sapphires are chemically identical to natural but display curved growth structures and gas bubbles without accompanying liquid. Common in mass-produced jewelry.
Flux and hydrothermal: Chatham, Inamori (Czochralski pulling), Tairus, and others. More expensive with appearance closer to natural — they show specific growth features requiring microscopic identification.
Synthetic star sapphires: Linde Division (Union Carbide) synthesized the first flame-fusion star rubies and sapphires in 1947 — titanium in the melt formed star-shaped needle inclusions after heating and cooling. Today, synthetic star corundum in various colors is produced using Verneuil variants.
Fancy sapphires (padparadscha, orange, yellow): Chatham produces flux-grown pink and orange sapphires; Inamori and Russian producers use Czochralski for red, orange, and colorless corundum; hydrothermal methods for color-change varieties. GIA clearly marks every synthetic sapphire as "laboratory-grown".
Treatment
The majority of sapphires (85–90%) are heat treated to improve color and clarity. Standard heating at 1700–1800°C is acceptable and often nearly undetectable. Beryllium diffusion treatment (diffusion of beryllium at high temperatures) creates artificial color throughout or only on the stone's surface — this is controversial and dramatically reduces value. GIA certificates distinguish: "no indications of heating" (premium), "indications of heating" (standard), "evidence of beryllium" (low value). Padparadscha certification is particularly demanding — GIA and SSEF have strict criteria.

Asterizem
Asterism is an optical phenomenon in which light creates a glowing multi-rayed star on the surface of a cabochon-cut gemstone. The most famous examples are star ruby and star sapphire with a distinct six-rayed star that moves with the light source. Some stones, such as star garnet or Indian sapphire, display a twelve-rayed star.
Care & maintenance
Corundum hardness 9 makes sapphire one of the most durable gemstones for wear. Clean with mild detergent and soft brush. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are safe for untreated and standard heat-treated stones. Avoid for diffusion-treated stones. Regularly check prong integrity.
