Emerald is the green variety of beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈), colored by chromium and/or vanadium. It is one of the four classical precious gemstones and the only one where inclusions are not just expected but even accepted. Due to complex crystallization in metamorphic rocks, emeralds never grow flawlessly — a "clean emerald" is actually rarer than a "clean ruby or sapphire."

History
Egyptians were mining emeralds in the mountains near the Red Sea around 3500 BC — the site, today known as "Cleopatra's Mines," was named after the Egyptian queen who was an enthusiastic collector of emeralds. The Romans knew of an Alpine deposit at Habachtal in Austria (c. 500 BC).
The Incas in South America used emeralds as offerings to the gods and sacred objects; the Colombian deposits were guarded with extreme secrecy. Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century used torture and force on the Incas to learn the source. Once found, they began importing Colombian emeralds to Europe and the Middle East — soon overshadowing all previous sources.
Emeralds are among the oldest jeweled ornaments in the world: a known example is emerald-set jewelry from the pharaoh Amenhotep II (c. 1426 BC), who was buried with gems in his tomb. Egypt remained the primary source until the 16th century.

Jardin (garden): GIA introduced the term "jardin" (French: garden) for the network of inclusions in emerald — fractures, fluid inclusions, crystals, and growth zones. In the industry, the presence of jardin is normal; a perfectly clean emerald is a pathological rarity. Quality is not assessed by the absence of inclusions, but by whether the jardin disrupts transparency and color.
Colombia vs. Zambia: Colombian stones come in two styles depending on the mine. Muzo emeralds have the warmest, most intense green with a reddish hue and high fluorescence — due to higher chromium content. Chivor emeralds are more blue-green, cleaner. Kagem emeralds from Zambia are more blue-green, often darker but exceptionally clean for emeralds. GIA confirmation of Colombian origin adds a 20–100% premium over Zambian.
Grading emeralds: GIA does not grade emeralds on the standard FL-I3 clarity scale — it uses a descriptive scale for "Type III colored stones" (inclusions expected). Instead, the overall visual appearance is assessed: "eye-clean" is an emerald where the jardin is not visible to the naked eye in direct observation.
Color: Ideal color is "vivid bluish green to pure green" per GIA standard. Too dark or too pale reduces value. Blue-green to pure green tones are optimal.
Vanadium vs. chromium emeralds: GIA defines emerald by chromium and/or vanadium content. Green beryls without these elements are not emeralds — they are simply "green beryl" and command significantly lower prices.
Rarity
A fine-quality emerald without visible inclusions is rarer than a comparable diamond. GIA notes that virtually every natural emerald contains a "jardin" (little garden) — a network of fractures, inclusions, and breaks that has become an accepted sign of authenticity. A stone entirely without jardin raises suspicion of synthetic origin.

Colombia (Muzo, Chivor, Coscuez) remains the source of the largest share of premium quality. Zambia (Kagem) has in recent decades become an equal source of intensely green stones with higher clarity.
Did you know
Virtually every natural emerald is filled with oil or resin — this is an industry norm that GIA treats as "acceptable treatment." The emerald cut (rectangle with truncated corners) was not developed for aesthetics but for protection: step facets create less mechanical stress in a fractured stone than a brilliant cut.
Muzo emeralds from Colombia have a particularly intense, warm green color without any bluish tint — this property in gemology is called "emerald green" and is the standard against which all emeralds are compared. Chivor emeralds are more bluish-green.
"Trapiche emeralds" are exceptionally rare specimens from Colombia with a natural six-rayed star in the cross-section of the stone — this pattern forms during crystallization, not from inclusions. Per GIA, these are among the most gemologically fascinating natural phenomena in emeralds.
Natural vs lab-grown
Emerald was the first precious gemstone to be successfully synthesized commercially. American Carroll Chatham developed the flux method in San Francisco in the 1930s — today flux and hydrothermal are the two primary methods for synthetic emerald production.
Flux synthetics (Chatham, Gilson): show three-dimensional veil-like inclusions, dripping-icicle particles, or irregular bubbles — recognizable under magnification. Chatham began marketing in the mid-1930s.
Hydrothermal synthetics (Biron — Australia, Tairus — Thailand/Russia): hardest to distinguish from natural — show chevron growth zoning and seed plate traces that do not occur in natural emeralds. Per GIA CS: "Hydrothermal is today the primary synthetic emerald growth method."
Key difference from natural: natural Colombian emeralds display three-phase inclusions (solid + liquid + gas simultaneously) — this combination does not occur in synthetics. Synthetic emeralds are generally cleaner and less fractured than natural. GIA clearly marks every synthetic emerald as "laboratory-grown".
Treatment
Filling fractures with oils or resins is an industry-standard practice — per GIA estimates, 90–99% of all commercial emeralds are treated. Traditionally, cedarwood oil was used; today Opticon or Permasafe resin is common. GIA grades treatment extent: none (untreated — exceptional premium), minor (minimal — acceptable without value reduction), moderate (reduces value 20–50%), significant (drastically reduces value). Treatment is NOT permanent — resins eventually fade or crack; the stone can be "re-oiled" by a gemologist.

Fluorescenca
Fluorescence is a phenomenon where a gemstone absorbs invisible UV light (ultraviolet) and immediately re-emits it as visible light of a different color. Burmese rubies fluoresce vivid red under UV light — this dramatically enhances their appearance and value. Many diamonds fluoresce blue, which some buyers find desirable (gives blue-white appearance in diffused daylight) and others undesirable (gives an "oily" look under incandescent light). Emeralds often fluoresce red.
Care & maintenance
Emerald is relatively softer (7.5–8) and has a jardin that makes it more fragile than ruby/sapphire. Never clean with ultrasonic or steam — it dissolves and removes filling oils/resins and can widen fractures. Clean only with mild detergent and soft brush in lukewarm water. Avoid chemicals, perfumes, and thermal shock. Remove when doing household chores and manual work. Every 5–10 years, professional inspection and re-oiling as needed is recommended.
