Topaz is aluminum silicate fluoride (Al₂SiO₄(F,OH)₂) with hardness 8 — an exceptionally hard and durable gemstone for wear. It comes in a rich palette of colors: naturally colorless, yellow, orange, pink, blue, and green. "Imperial topaz" — exclusively from Brazil, in vivid orange to peachy color with reddish overtones — is the absolutely most valuable variety.

History
The name "topaz" has unclear etymology — perhaps from Sanskrit "tapas" (fire) or from Greek "Topazios" (an island in the Red Sea, today Zabargad — where peridot was mined, then called topaz). This confusion pervades all of ancient gemology.
In Middle English texts and in the Old Testament, the mentioned "topaz" was likely peridot or citrine — not topaz in the modern sense. True identification of topaz was only possible with the development of mineralogy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Brazilian topazes, particularly from Minas Gerais, were among the first commercially exploited deposits in South America after discovery in the 18th century. Portuguese colonizers imported them to Europe and established the "Brazilian topaz" standard.
In depth
Imperial topaz: Exclusively from the Ouro Preto mines in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Color ranges from vivid orange to peachy-orange to pink-orange — with a metallic reddish pleochroism. Named after the Russian Tsar ("imperial"). It is rare — natural orange color without irradiation. Prices rival low-quality rubies and sapphires.
Blue topaz: Naturally colorless topaz becomes vivid blue through irradiation and heat treatment. Three varieties: Sky Blue (light blue), Swiss Blue (intense blue), London Blue (dark blue with gray component). Blue topaz is one of the most common "treated" stones on the market — accessible and affordable.
Natural blue topaz: Exists naturally, but is exceptionally rare. Most blue topaz on the market is treated.
Yellow and pink topaz: Natural yellow-orange specimens are rare and prized. Natural pink topaz (Brazil, Pakistan) is rare — most is heat-treated Imperial topaz or irradiated colorless.
Confusion with citrine: "Topaz" is one of the most misused names in jewelry — citrines are sold as "gold topaz," "Madeira topaz," "citrine topaz." These are misleading trade names; a gemologist distinguishes with a refractometer.
Cut and brilliance: Topaz has a high refractive index and excellent dispersion — with ideal cutting it displays fire comparable to diamond at a fraction of the price.
Rarity
Colorless and blue topaz are common and price-accessible. Imperial topaz — medium orange to red-orange color — is rarer and commands premium prices; chromium-colored red/pink/violet is rare.
Brazil's Capão mine (Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais) is the sole source of true Imperial topaz with red-orange color. Natural red topaz without chromium color is exceptionally rare.
Blue topaz, which is today most common on the market (Sky Blue, Swiss Blue, London Blue), is almost always colorless topaz with irradiation treatment — natural blue is an extreme rarity.
Did you know
Topaz is piezoelectric and pyroelectric — when heated or squeezed, an electric charge develops. This property is shared with tourmaline, but is less well known in topaz.
"Imperial topaz" in the 19th century was reserved exclusively for the Russian imperial family — Brazilian specimens were particularly prized. Today the term "Imperial" describes color (red-orange) not origin.
A topaz crystal from Brazil ("El-Dorado Topaz") weighing 31,000 ct is one of the world's largest faceted gems and is displayed at the Smithsonian. It is a colorless topaz demonstrating the dramatic size this mineral can achieve in crystal form.
Treatment
Blue topaz is almost always irradiation-treated — neutron or gamma irradiation followed by heat treatment. This is permanent, stable, and industry standard. Imperial topaz is often heat treated to intensify color or eliminate brownish tones. Natural colorless topaz is sometimes coated — "mystic topaz" with a rainbow surface coating; this wears off.

Chatoyancy (mačje oko)
Chatoyancy, also known as the "cat's eye effect," is an optical phenomenon where light creates a glowing band of light that moves across the surface of a cabochon — similar to a cat's pupil. The finest examples are chrysoberyl cat's eye (Cymophane), alexandrite cat's eye, and tiger's eye. The effect is sharpest under a single, direct light source.
Fluorescence
Fluorescenca
Fluorescence is a phenomenon where a gemstone absorbs invisible UV light (ultraviolet) and immediately re-emits it as visible light of a different color. Burmese rubies fluoresce vivid red under UV light — this dramatically enhances their appearance and value. Many diamonds fluoresce blue, which some buyers find desirable (gives blue-white appearance in diffused daylight) and others undesirable (gives an "oily" look under incandescent light). Emeralds often fluoresce red.
Pleochroism
Pleokroizem
Pleochroism is the property of certain crystals to display different colors when viewed from different crystallographic directions. Alexandrite shows three colors (trichromatism): green, brownish-red, and violet. Tanzanite has strong trichromatism: blue, violet, and reddish-brown. Kunzite shows pink, violet, and colorless. Pleochroism results from the anisotropic optical properties of non-cubic minerals.
Care & maintenance
Hardness 8 is excellent, but topaz has one perfect cleavage plane — despite hardness, it can split relatively easily with a sharp blow. Clean with mild detergent; ultrasonic not recommended (cleavage planes). Protect from thermal shock and chemicals.
