From the atelier: from sketch to a custom ring
Many wonder what actually happens between "I order a ring" and "I receive a ring". Here's a behind-the-scenes look — our custom-making process, step by step.
1. The conversation
It all begins with an idea — yours. We talk about the occasion, style, stone, budget and how you'll wear the piece. Often you bring a picture for inspiration or a piece you like. The goal of this step is to understand what you really want.
2. The sketch
From the conversation comes a sketch — the first visual representation. Here we align on shape, proportions and details. The sketch is a cheap phase to change, so we take our time to get it right.
3. 3D model
We turn the sketch into a 3D model (CAD). This lets you see the piece from all sides, check proportions and precisely determine how much material will be needed. We can adjust the model until you're satisfied.
4. Wax / prototype
From the 3D model we make a wax model or prototype. This is the moment the ring first takes physical form — you can try it on and feel the proportions in person before we go to gold.
5. Casting
Using the lost-wax method, we surround the wax model with plaster, the wax is burned out, and molten gold (or platinum) is poured into the resulting cavity. This creates a raw metal piece.
6. Finishing
The most time-consuming part. The raw casting must be:
- cleaned and filed
- shaped and smoothed
- prepared with settings for the stones
- polished to a final shine
7. Stone setting
The goldsmith sets each stone into its setting by hand and secures it. This requires precision — a setting pressed too hard can damage the stone, too weak won't hold it.
8. Inspection and collection
Then comes the final inspection: do the stones sit well, is the surface flawless, is the size right. Only then is the piece ready for collection — with documentation and care advice.
How long it takes
Usually 4–7 weeks from design approval to collection, depending on complexity. If you have a deadline (anniversary, engagement), tell us in advance.
